Fall Fiesta at Vol State October 22, 2011

Save the date- Saturday, October 22, 2011 will be the fifth annual Fall Fiesta at Vol State in Gallatin from 10am-4pm.We’ll have plenty of food, music and fun while celebrating Hispanic culture.

As usual, non-profits are welcome to have tables for free. Businesses need to be sponsors to have a table. That is a $100 tax-free donation to the Sumner Hispanic Alliance scholarship fund. 100 percent of all funds raised go to fund scholarships for Hispanic students at Vol State. Hispanic Fiesta sponsorship opportunities for area businesses

The Fall Fiesta at Vol State is a free celebration of Hispanic culture. Food, music and fun will be among the highlights. There will be a food cook-off contest featuring homemade dishes from many different Hispanic countries. A soccer contest will run all day and feature trophies for the winners. There will be a live band, a folk dance exhibition and many other cultural events. We’ll also have medical check-ups and information from area community groups.

Non-profits are welcome to have a free table at the event, as long as it fits the theme of the event and addresses needs in the Hispanic community. At this time we are not having any businesses actually selling items at the Fiesta. We have decided to keep it an entirely free event.

Businesses who want to reach the Hispanic population can have display tables and give out free samples as a Fiesta Sponsor. There is a required donation of $100 to the Hispanic Alliance Scholarship Fund at Vol State. It will go for books or tuition for a Vol State student each year. All donations are tax deductible and will be made directly to the College Foundation.

Any sponsors who make donations are entitled to have their company logo displayed as a sponsor on Fiesta fliers.  Thousands of these fliers are distributed throughout north Davidson, Sumner, Robertson and Wilson Counties. Sponsors will be added to the poster runs as new ones are printed.

The Fall Fiesta at Vol State is a non-profit community event paid for by Volunteer State Community College. It is run in a partnership with the Sumner County Hispanic Alliance. Everyone is invited to participate and attend.

La Noche de la Familia Hispana en Volunteer State Community College

El martes 8 de febrero, de 5:30 p.m. a 8 p.m., estaremos llevando a cabo La Noche de la Familia Hispana en Volunteer State Community College en la biblioteca Thigpen. Este evento anual se realiza en español y en inglés. Provee información, para personas de todas las edades, sobre nuestros programas con grados, clases de ESOL (Inglés como Segunda Lengua), admisiones y ayuda financiera. Consejeros de Vol State que hablan español trabajan personalmente con estudiantes potenciales y sus padres. On Tuesday, February 8 from 5:30pm to 8pm we will be holding Hispanic Family Night at Volunteer State Community College in the Thigpen Libray. This annual event is held in Spanish and English. It provides people of all ages with information about Vol State degree programs, ESOL classes, financial aid and admissions. Spanish speaking Vol State advisors work one-on-one with potential students and parents. We call it Hispanic Family Night because we encourage the entire family to come and visit. We’ll have refreshments and activities for the kids.

Celebración de la Herencia Hispana en la Fiesta de Otoño de Vol State

La cuarta Fiesta de Otoño en Vol State es la celebración de la cultura Hispana y sus logros. La “Fiesta de Otoño” se enlaza con el mes de la Herencia Hispana y les ofrece a todos la oportunidad de venir a disfrutar música en vivo, comida gratuita, grupos de danza y un torneo de fútbol.
“Este año estamos expandiendo las actividades para los niños incluyendo manualidades artísticas, artesanías y cuentos”, dijo Eric Melcher, Coordinador de Comunicaciones, para Vol State. “Cada año tratamos de asegurarnos de que la Fiesta tenga mucho que ofrecer para toda la familia”.

Durante la competencia de comida latinoamericana, los participantes mostrarán su receta favorita ofreciendo platillos de diferentes países. La competencia está patrocinada por la Alianza Hispana del Condado de Sumner quien también ayuda a organizar la Fiesta. Después de la actividad culinaria el público podrá probar los platillos. Las danzas regionales serán bailadas por el Hispano America Dance Troupe. Habrá torneos de fútbol durante todo el día. Habrá competencias de eliminación de “medio-campo”, “medio-equipo” con trofeos para los equipos finalistas. Tantos jugadores como equipos pueden registrarse desde las 9 a.m.

“Recomendamos a las personas que traigan sillas plegables para exteriores y cobijas para que se queden todo el día” dijo Melcher. “Esto no es solo para los Hispanos, esperamos que todo el mundo venga y se divierta”.

La Fiesta de Otoño es gratuita. Se realizará con lluvia o sol, usaremos el gimnasio de Vol State en caso de mal tiempo.

La Fiesta de Otoño se llevará a cabo el sábado 9 de octubre de 10 a.m. a 4 p.m. en la Ciudad Universitaria del Volunteer State Community College, 1480 Nashville Pike en Gallatin.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage at Vol State Fall Fiesta

The fourth annual Fall Fiesta at Vol State is a celebration of Hispanic culture and achievement. Fiesta de otoño, as it is known in Spanish, ties in with Hispanic Heritage Month and will offer everyone the opportunity to come enjoy live music, free food, dance groups and a soccer tournament.

“We’re expanding the children’s activities this year to include arts and crafts and storytelling,” said Eric Melcher, Communications Coordinator for Vol State. “Each year we make sure the Fiesta has plenty to offer the entire family.

People will show off their favorite family recipes during a Latin American food cook-off contest, featuring dishes from many different countries. That contest is sponsored by the Sumner Hispanic Alliance which is also helping to organize the Fiesta itself. After the judging the public will be able to taste the entries. Cultural dances will be performed by the Hispano America Dance Troupe. There will be a soccer tournament running all day long. It will be a half-field, half-team elimination competition with trophies for the top teams. Players and teams can sign up starting at 9 a.m.

“We’re encouraging people to bring a blanket or lawn chairs, and spend the day,” Melcher said. “It’s not just for Hispanics, we hope everyone will come out and have fun.”

The Fall Fiesta is free. It will be held rain or shine, with the college Gym being used in case of bad weather. Alliance Fiesta planning meeting August 17 - La próxima reunión 17 de agosto

The next Sumner Hispanic Alliance meeting will be Tuesday, August 17 at 5:30pm at Taqueria La Herradura, 321 West Main St. in Gallatin. We'll continue our planning for the upcoming Hispanic Fall Fiesta at Vol State. The Fiesta will be held on Saturday, October 9 from 10am-4pm.

We had lots of good ideas at the last meeting. Please join us and get involved in planning this celebration of Hispanic culture!

The next Sumner Hispanic Alliance meeting will be Tuesday, July 27 at 5:30pm at Taqueria La Herradura, 321 West Main St. in Gallatin. We'll start planning the upcoming Hispanic Fall Fiesta at Vol State. The Fiesta will be held on Saturday, October 9 from 10am-4pm. Once again the Sumner Hispanic Alliance will plan many of the events. So, please join us and bring ideas.


We'll also spend time remembering our good friend Pedro Arias, who passed away suddenly two weeks ago. His funeral the other day was a touching reminder of how much he meant to so many people in the community.

Fall Fiesta October 9 - Join Us to Help Plan!

The Fall Fiesta at Vol State will be held on Saturday, October 9 2010 from 10am-4pm. The annual event brings in hundreds of people and features food, music and fun. It is held on the Volunteer State Community College campus in Gallatin. The Sumner Hispanic Alliance partners with the College for  the event. Come join us for a planning meeting on Tuesday, July 27 at 5:30pm at La Herradura restaurant- 321 W. Main St Gallatin, TN. Soccer in the Park Day-May 16

The Gallatin Soccer League holds regular soccer matches on Sundays at Rogers Field in Gallatin. On Sunday, May 16 we will use this opportunity to provide information. Nonprofit and community organizations are invited to join the Sumner Hispanic Alliance in this day to reach out to the Hispanic community. You will need to provide everything you need: tables, chairs etc. Out of respect to the organizers of the soccer league we ask that you not give out any food or drink. They sell it on site and it is how they help to pay for the soccer matches. We also stress that this invitation is only open to nonprofit entities.

La Noche Familiar Hispana en Vol State se enfoca en la educación

La educación te puede ayudar a obtener un mejor trabajo y crecer en tu profesión. Volunteer State Community College tendrá un evento especialmente diseñado para Familias Hispanas. La noche de Educación de la Familia Hispana te ayudará a responder las preguntas acerca de todo lo referente a programas con grados y clases de inglés. La reunión tendrá lugar el martes 9 de febrero de 5:30 p.m. a 8 p.m. en el campus de Vol State en Gallatin.

“Vendrá gente de todas las edades: jóvenes de high school (colegio o secundaria) que se están preparando para asistir al college, adultos que quieren regresar a la escuela o que quieren aumentar sus habilidades con el inglés,” dijo Eric Melcher, Coordinador de Comunicación de Vol State. “Tendremos muchas oficinas de Vol State disponibles, incluyendo admisiones y consejería. También tendremos personas bilingües disponibles para consejería y traducir al español.

Las clases de ESOL son un tema popular durante La Noche Familiar Hispana. ESOL por sus siglas en inglés significa “Inglés para Hablantes de otras Lenguas”. Las clases porporcionan a los hablantes español u otros idiomas un paso grande en el aprendizaje del inglés. Además ayudan a desarrollar habilidades en conversación, escritura y lectura.

Se servirá un refrigerio y habrá películas y entretenimiento para los niños. De este modo los padres podrán tener tiempo de hacer preguntas. Todos están invitados a asistir a La Noche Familiar Hispana. El evento tendrá lugar en la biblioteca Thigpen en Vol.State, 1480 Nashville Pike, Gallatin TN 37066.
